Punctuated Equilibrium in the Bullpen: The 2005 World Champion Chicago White Sox Blend Sabermetrics & Sociology to Deliver a Successful Innovation (S10)
Jeff Angus

The closer role, honed and refined by Tony LaRussa in the 1990s to the point of building the bullpen solely as a means to maximize one man’s saves, has been the subject of much media blather and more than a few empirical studies. In this paper, Jeff Angus begins by reviewing bullpen design, citing its proponents and its critics. He then moves on to recent attempts to create innovative alternative models, such as “Closer by Committee” (2003 Red Sox) and “Bullpen by Situation” (2005 Cubs). Creating a new type of tabular chart of bullpen usage patterns, he then discusses the “Closer by Situation” approach successfully used by the champion 2005 White Sox.

Jeff Angus (iwksealab@comcast.net) is a management consultant and baseball writer. His latest book is Management by Baseball (Harper Collins, 2006), and he is the Sabermetric stats columnist for the Seattle Times. Making his first SABR convention presentation, Jeff lives in Seattle and works everywhere.
