12:30 – 1PM, Superior-Municipal Room Effect of Batting Order (not Lineup) on Scoring (S08) David W. Smith
Examination of large play-by-play databases has established that teams score at different rates in different innings, with the greatest number of runs scored by both home and road teams in the first inning. In this study, Dave Smith tests the effect of batting order (not to be confused with lineup, which controls batting order only in the first inning) on team run scoring. Using 1957-2005 play-by-play data collected by Retrosheet and other sources, he examines inning batting order effects, accounting for numerous associated variables such as home/road, era, overall scoring level, and the designated hitter. He’ll also compare his results with predictions from statistical modeling, such as Pankin’s Markov approach.
David W. Smith (dwsmith@retrosheet.org) joined SABR in 1977 and has made numerous SABR research presentations. In 2001 at SABR31 in Milwaukee, he won the USA Today Sports Weekly Award for his presentation on the 1951 NL pennant race. A past co-chair of the Statistical Analysis Committee and the recipient of the first SABR Special Achievement award, he is also the founder and President of Retrosheet (http://www.retrosheet.org), a non-profit organization dedicated to the collection, computerization and distribution of play by play accounts of as many Major League games as possible. At last year’s convention, he received SABR's highest honor, the Bob Davids Award.
