The 2006 CBA and the Battles Within It (T19)
Maury Brown
Dan Fox

Will there be another work stoppage when the time comes for rewriting MLB's Collective Bargaining Agreement? The current CBA expires just before Christmas of this year. Taking into account a vast range of information sources - the resolution of the 2002 CBA, statistical analysis of payroll distributions, changing MLB revenue streams, baseball's evolving business model, Congressional interference on drug use, and their own expertise and contacts - Maury Brown and Dan Fox have written on this vital topic extensively in The Hardball Times and on SABR's Business of Baseball Committee's email list. Here, they'll summarize their findings, suggest what may be key issues to be negotiated, and predict whether there will be a strike, a lockout, or an amicable solution.

Maury Brown (maurybaseballcrazy@yahoo.com) co-chairs SABR's Business of Baseball committee and is currently Vice-President of NWSABR. His analysis and commentary appears in numerous online and print outlets, from his hometown Portland Oregonian to the Fantasy Sports Monthly. His essay on the collusion rulings of the late 1980s and early 1990s is in the recent Rob Neyer's Big Book of Baseball Blunders : A Complete Guide to the Worst Decisions and Stupidest Moments in Baseball History. That said, SABR36 is his first SABR convention.

Software developer Dan Fox (dfox@us.ci.org) lives in Colorado Springs CO with his wife and daughters. He blogs on Dan Agonistes (http://danagonistes.blogspot.com), has written for The Hardball Times (http://www.hardballtimes.com), and now writes for Baseball Prospectus (www.baseballprospectus.com). Dan was briefly a SABR member at age 14 in 1982, and at long last re-upped in 2003.
