3:30-4PM, Federal Room Welcome to the Halls of Relief: An Historical Review of Relief Pitching (T16) Mike Carminati
Bruce Sutter's election to the Hall of Fame once again turns the spotlight of baseball analysis on relief pitching. If Sutter's in, why not Gossage? Lee Smith had more saves than anyone ... is Mariano Rivera the best ever? ... do saves really measure the quality of a reliever? ... and on and on. After reviewing the historical changes in reliever usage, from the 19th century through McGraw to today's LaRussian dogma, Mike Carminati combines concepts and methods from Bill James and Baseball Prospectus to produce a "relief runs saved" yardstick that he says can be applied to all relievers, regardless of era, role, and usage patterns. The results of his analysis are in this presentation.
