1-1:30pm, Superior-Municipal Room Evaluating Managers: Which Men Get the Most and Which Get the Least Out of Their Players (T05) Chris Jaffe
Applying novel methodologies to known problems and testing existing approaches on novel datasets are hallmarks of good empirical research. Chris Jaffe does both in this sabermetric examination of major league managers. Borrowing and adapting the method of decomposing team performance into "luck", talent, etc., presented by Phil Birnbaum at last year's convention, Jaffe analyzes team performance as associated with the man who manages the club. Are some managers better than others at drawing out the talents of their players? If so, does this ability persist from year to year, or from team to team? And, of course, we'll find out whom the Jaffe methodology ranks at the top and bottom of the distribution of managers in the big leagues.
Chris Jaffe (jaffechris@yahoo.com) is a Cubs fan and a PhD candidate at American history at Northern Illinois University. He has written pieces on baseball for the Baseball Think Factory website (www.baseballthinkfactory.org).
