12:30-1PM, Superior-Municipal Room The Wizard of Waxahachie (T03) Steve Treder
Paul Richards was a player, a manager, and a general manager in professional baseball for half a century. He played for Connie Mack, caught Carl Hubbell, managed Brooks Robinson, and signed and developed Joe Morgan. Without his fascination for the knuckleball, we might never have heard of Hoyt Wilhelm or Phil Niekro (much less, viewed their plaques in Cooperstown). Though he'll never make the Hall of Fame, Richards's career resonates for those of us who grew up around the middle of last century. Steve Treder leads us through the life of Waxahachie Texas' favorite son.
Steve Treder (streder@hardballtimes.com) writes a weekly column on baseball history for The Hardball Times (hardballtimes.com). He has presented papers to the Cooperstown Symposium on Baseball and American Culture, and had numerous articles published in Nine: A Journal of Baseball History and Culture. A lifelong San Francisco Giants fan, he is Vice President for Strategic Development for Western Management Group, a compensation consulting firm headquartered in Los Gatos, California.
