The Leo Mazzone effect Peter Bendix and Matt Gallagher King II
Atlanta Braves pitching coach Leo Mazzone enjoys a reputation as being a tremendous pitching coach. Anecdotal evidence suggests that he can perform near-miracles on pitchers that other teams have cast off. We set out to see if the numbers backed up the sentiment.
We have looked at every pitcher who made a contribution to the Braves' pitching staff since Mazzone was hired in 1991, and compared the player's statistics while pitching for Mazzone with the his statistics while pitching for other teams. The results are very interesting, and seem to prove that the "Leo Mazzone Effect" is positive and significant.
MATT GALLAGHER is a junior at Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts, majoring in political science. Originally from Winchester, Massachusetts, he is an avid Boston sports fan.
PETER BENDIX is a sophomore at Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts, planning on majoring in economics and political science. Peter is a die-hard Cleveland fan, and hopes one day to have a career in sports management.
