The Doug Pappas Research Award recognizes the best oral research presentation at the Annual Convention. Before 2004 it was known as The USA Today Sports Weekly Award; the name was changed to honor the late Doug Pappas. USA Today Sports Weekly continues to sponsor both it and the companion award for the best poster presentation.
The USA Today Sports Weekly Award (aka The Baseball Weekly Award) was established in 1992 to honor the best Research Presentation at the Annual Convention. The award includes a $250 cash prize with a matching amount donated to SABR.
The USA Today Sports Weekly Award continues the John W. Cox Award, in honor of the late John W. Cox of Carrollton, Texas, which recognized the best presentations in 1990-1992. The Cox Award was first presented at the 1990 Convention in Cleveland.
