The 2018 SABR Day program is shaping up!

Third Annual Meeting of the
Baltimore/Babe Ruth Chapter

When:  Sunday, January 28, 2018; 10:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M.

Where:  The PEABODY HEIGHTS BREWERY, a site with tremendous baseball history attached to it.  The brewery, at 401 East 30th Street, is located on the former site of Oriole Park V, also known as Terrapin Park, which was the home of the Federal League Baltimore Terrapins from 1914 to 1915, and the International League Orioles from 1916 to 1944. The Brewery also is across the street from the site of Oriole Park II and IV, where the American League Orioles played in 1901 and 1902

Street parking is free that day.  Additional spaces are be provided by the brewery.

How much:  The meeting is open to everyone. Registration is $25 for everyone (SABR members and guests) and includes pizza and soda. If you prefer, you may bring your own lunch, in which case please remit $19 and we will adjust our pizza order accordingly.

This is a new location and a new day of the week. We hope everyone will come and enjoy our new and improved annual meeting. Beer will be on tap for those interested in purchasing and sampling such ballpark fare as Old Oriole Park Bohemian.


Leslie Heaphy
Leslie was first elected to the SABR (national) Board in 2010 then elected as Vice-President in 2016.  She has been a member of SABR since 1989 and chair of the Women in Baseball Committee since 1995. Leslie is an Associate Professor of History at Kent State University and has published extensively on Negro Leagues and women’s baseball. She was the editor of “Black Baseball and Chicago”. In 2008, she was the founding editor of the journal “Black Ball”, published by McFarland. She was the 2014 winner of the Bob Davids Award, SABR's highest honor.

Tim Kurkjian
Bethesda-born Kurkjian attended, appropriately, Walter Johnson High School and is today the dean of ESPN baseball announcers and analysts and a long-time friend of SABR. Author of “I’m Fascinated by Sacrifice Flies”, “Is This a Great Game or What?” and “American’s Game”. He will have copies at the meeting and will be available for autographs.

Ken Mars
Ken will discuss his documentary “Baltimore Baseball Before the Orioles”.

Charlie Vascellaro
Charlie has new baseball research not yet available to the public that he will discuss that day.

Bernard McKenna
Dr. McKenna will discuss his research about the Baltimore Black Sox for his upcoming book about that team.

David Stinson
Chapter board member Dave Stinson will talk about the history of the site, as well as the other former ballpark sites located in the are, and explain how his book, “Deadball: A Metaphysical Baseball Novel” relates to our meeting place and those other ballpark sites.

But there’s more! Donated for the benefit of our chapter are hundreds of baseball books and memorabilia items, available to all in attendance through our annual raffle. Winning raffle ticket numbers will be posted during the meeting. Holders of the first numbers called will have the first choice of items to take home in the order of ticket numbers drawn. Tickets will be $1 apiece (10 for $5), proceeds going to the chapter. This year’s available items may break all records. Please let us know if you wish to donate an item to the raffle. We appreciate the generosity of our members.

In addition to the program, this gathering is our official annual business meeting and election of officers to be held at the very beginning.  Election will be by voice vote of members present.

  • President:  Incumbent Bruce Brown is running for re-election to a 2-year term.
  • Chapter Vice-President Incumbent Peter Coolbaugh will be entering the 2nd year of his 2-year term and so will not be on the ballot.
  • Chapter Treasurer:  Incumbent Gary Levy is retiring from the position and the Board at the end of his term.  Ken Mars has tossed his hat into the ring for consideration for the position.
  • Chapter Secretary:  Incumbent Michelle Freeman will be entering the 2nd year of her 2-year term and so will not be on the ballot.
  • Board Member At-Large: Incumbent David Stinson will be entering the 2nd year of his 2-year term and so will not be on the ballot.
